Construction on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal began in the 5th century B.C.E. and continued on and off for hundreds of years, until it connected two of China's most important waterways, the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers. Its largest period of growth occurred in the 6th and 7th centuries, when the Sui dynasty linked several existing canals together. The system continued to expand under subsequent dynasties, becoming a critically important means of communication and transportation of goods, such as grains and rice. Still in use today, the canal spans more than 1,100 miles and is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.:
