Step 2 : Answer to the question "Where can you find these brightly colored houses?"
Cape Town, South Africa - The Bo-Kaap neighborhood of Cape Town is also known as the Malay Quarter. In the 18th and early 19th centuries it housed slaves who were primarily from Malaysia and Indonesia. Since the slaves did not own the homes in the Bo-Kaap, they had no control over the color of the houses. All of the houses were a drab white. But when slavery was abolished in South Africa in 1834, the former slaves became homeowners. To celebrate their freedom they painted their houses in the bright, exuberant colors we see today. Today the Bo-Kaap is a popular stop for travelers stopping in Cape Town as the striking colors make for a great photo op. The neighborhood is also home to Cape Malay cuisine, a flavorful fusion of Malaysian and Dutch fare. For the historically inclined, the Bo-Kaap museum has plenty of exhibits in addition to an audio tour which can teach more about the area’s culture and history you as you stroll through this vibrant, historical neighborhood.:
