Cuyahoga River - Once upon a time, Cleveland was a center of industry in the United States, but that declined rapidly in the 1960s. Cleveland had some infrastructure problems that resulted in the disposal of industrial waste and sewage in the Cuyahoga River. On June 22, 1969, a passing train sent a spark into the river which ignited an oil slick atop the water, which spread to the floating debris and then to the wooden trestles. Flames shot up to more than five stories in the air. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire on the Cuyahoga River in about a half hour, but a considerable amount of damage had been done. The railroad bridge over the Cuyahoga was a total loss, as were the wooden trestles.:
