Back in January 1887, however, an 8-inch thick snowflake measuring 15 inches in diameter was found at Fort Keogh, in what was then the Territory of Montana. (Montana wasn't admitted into the Union as the 41st state until two years later, in November 1889.) Scientists believe that these huge snowflakes are created when smaller snowflakes clump together to create larger crystals. Giant snowflakes have been sighted all over the world, but according to the New York Times, the one at Fort Keogh is listed as the biggest by Guinness World Records.:
