This tree is believed to be the oldest, continuously living tree to be planted by humans. It's estimated to be around 2,300 years old, so it has see quite a bit of Sri Lankan (and world) history. It was said to have been planted from a cutting from another Bodhi tree in India and brought to Sri Lanka by Princess Sangamitta, daughter of the Indian Emperor Ashoka and sister of Mahinda (who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka).
