Belgrade - Belgrade was the capital of Yugoslavia, a former nation in the Balkan Peninsula. In the aftermath of the Ottoman Empire's defeat in World War I, the Serbian, Croatian, Slovenian, and other regional powers combined to form a single state. Constant clashes resulted in the declaration of independence by both Slovenia and Croatia, with more secession to follow. Ultimately, Yugoslavia came to an end in 2003. In its place are now the countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia. Belgrade is now Serbia’s capital and largest city.:
