Her name was Julia DeForest Tuttle, and she's known as the \"Mother of Miami.\" In 1891, after the death of her husband, she decided to relocate from Ohio to a warmer climate and purchased 640 acres of oceanfront land near the north bank of the Miami River. When she made the move, she had to do so by barge, which she thought was terribly inconvenient. Fortunately for the now-bustling city, she was able to convince Henry Flagler, a railroad owner from the St. Augustine area, to extend his trains down to the Miami River. Having easy access to the railroad helped Tuttle achieve her vision of a thriving, bustling city on the ocean. :
