As light travels slower in water than in air, it “reflects\" off the water droplet and travels back the way it came, refracting (bending) the light as it leaves the droplet. Sunlight is made up of different colors due to its wavelengths of light. This causes violet to sit at the foot of the rainbow and red to sit at the top. Rainbows are technically full circles, visible from planes in certain conditions. Although rarer, double rainbows also exist. :
