27 - While more have been proposed, to date, 27 Amendments have been added to the U.S. Constitution since it was originally finalized in 1788. An Amendment serves as a revision or improvement to the original text of the document. According to Article V of the U.S. Constitution, an Amendment can be established in one of two ways, but only one has ever been put into effect. The 27 ratified Amendments were approved by at least two-thirds of the House and Senate; after that, they were were sent to the states for a vote, during which at least three-fourths of the states voted to affirm the proposed amendment. The most recent Amendment — the 27th, concerning changes in compensation for members of Congress — was ratified in 1992, but was actually first proposed way back in 1789.:
