In 1521, the famed conquistador Hernan Cortes conquered the Aztec Empire, thus claiming much of present-day Mexico for Spain. In 1523, Cortes sent Pedro de Alvarado on a quest to conquer the Maya located in what is now Guatemala. This conquest took much longer than the last, with many historians placing the end of the conflict around 1697. The Inca Empire, in what is now Peru, fell to the Spanish in 1572.:
