Before his groundbreaking invention, Berners-Lee worked in software design. In his work, he developed a program that stored information in files that were able to link together via connections. This is called hypertext today. Throughout the 1980s, Berners-Lee worked on perfecting this method for broader usage, hoping to apply it to the Internet to avoid the back and forth of email, which was time-consuming and limiting. In doing so, he created the world's first web server and browser, forming the World Wide Web. It was a hit, and in the early 1990s, the World Wide Web Consortium met to establish a set of standards to prevent poor user experience.:
