Alcatraz - Starting in 1853, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began fortifying the famous island located off the coast of San Francisco Bay known as Alcatraz in efforts to protect the growing Bay area.\nAs early as 1861, Alcatraz was being used as a military prison for Civil War prisoners, as the island was surrounded by cold water, rough seas and hazardous currents. In 1933, Alcatraz was acquired by the U.S. Department of Justice, and was subsequently turned into a federal prison in 1934. During its 29 years of use as a federal prison, Alcatraz held some rather famous prisoners from around the world. During this same span of time, the penitentiary claimed that no prisoner ever escaped Alcatraz successfully during the 14 escape attempts that were made. The entire Alcatraz Island was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and was further declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986.:
