In addition to the aforementioned two, the inhabited territories include the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa. The nine uninhabited (or nearly so) territories include reefs, atolls, and small islands. This includes Midway Atoll, Palmyra Atoll, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Wake Island, and Navassa Island. The Caribbean islets of Bajo Nuevo Bank and Serranilla Bank have both been claimed by the U.S. to a certain extent, but several other countries have also laid claim to these small places. Because of this uncertainty, we are not including them in our total.:
