France & England - With a name like “The Hundred Years’ War,” you’d expect the conflict between France and England to last only a century, but the war stretched 116 years, from 1337 to 1453. What started the medieval war? A conflict over succession to the French throne. French King Charles IV passed away in 1328 without an heir, leaving two male relatives with claims to the throne: King Philip VI, Charles’s first cousin, who succeeded him, and Edward III of England, Charles’s nearest male relative, who responded to Philip’s seizure of England’s duchy of Aquitaine by engaging Philip and his claim to the throne. Over the course of the war, England seized large parts of France – that is, until Joan of Arc came along and led the French army in recapturing some of its territory. She was burned at the stake for heresy, and the fighting continued until 1453, with England keeping the territory of Calais.:
