Step 2 : Answer to the question "Which volcano caused the most destructive eruption in U.S. history?"

Mount St. Helens, Washington - On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens let forth such a violent eruption that the top 1,000 feet of the mountain blew off entirely. Debris, gas, and ash spewed forth at hundreds of miles per hour and were followed by intense magma flows. Everything within a few miles of the eruption was obliterated almost instantly, millions of trees were lost to fire, and a mudslide caused by the mountain's glacier melting swept through homes and blocked rivers. The full extent of devastation covered an almost 230-square mile area, and although tremors and smaller eruptions gave people over two months notice, 57 people lost their lives because some refused to evacuate. In the aftermath, Congress created a 172-square mile protected area around the volcano where visitors can see how well the forest has recovered, track the path of the landslide, learn more about the eruption, and see for themselves the massive crater where a hulking mountain once stood.:
