Amsterdam - While there’s evidence that Antwerp was one of the first cities to host the trading of something that resembles stocks, the stock exchange in Amsterdam is really the one that modern traders would recognize. The Dutch East India Company, which has since garnered a somewhat infamous reputation, was the first to trade on the exchange in 1602. The company was also the first to have a modern structure in that it was the first limited liability company, a designation still used today. Finally, to cap it all off, the Netherlands is often called the first modern economy, which, given what we’ve just learned about stock exchanges and limited liability, makes a lot of sense.:
