Tarshish - Jonah was an Old Testament prophet who God commissioned to go to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Jonah was well aware of the terrible things the Assyrians were famous for. So when God said, “Go to Nineveh,” Jonah boarded a ship heading in the opposite direction, to a place called Tarshish. It’s tricky to identify exactly where Tarshish was located, but it seems to be a port in southern Spain. You know the rest of the story: God sent a storm, Jonah got thrown overboard. God sent a fish, Jonah was swallowed up and spent three days inside its belly. God caused the fish to spit him out onto dry land, and Jonah finally took the message of salvation to Nineveh. Nineveh repented, which irritated Jonah to no end. He sat and pouted in the hot sun. God sent a plant to shade the bitter prophet, and then sent a worm to eat the plant and a hot wind to scorch Jonah. He was reminding Jonah that Jonah’s pity for the plant was unwarranted, since he’d had nothing to do with its existence. On the other hand, God created and sustained the people and animals of Nineveh and it was right that He should have compassion upon them.:
