Step 2 : Answer to the question "Where did chocolate originate?"

Mexico - Although Europe is known as a leading chocolate producer nowadays, they are not the ones who created this divine treat. Mexico can be traced back to 1900 BC as the sole cultivator of cacao plants. The Olmec were the ones who started the process. Cacao beans were taken through a process of roasting, grinding, and mixing with water, honey, vanilla, and chili peppers to create a bitter drink. Mayans and Aztecs believed that the benefits of chocolate were god-like, and eventually reserved cacao for royalty. Spanish conquerors transformed the drink into the sugary substance we know (and eat too much of) today. Hernan Cortes introduced chocolate to Europe, and the rest is history. Chocolate became a leading product in the industry, from companies like Hershey and Mars. Today, the average American consumes 12 pounds of chocolate a year, according to History.com. Thank you, Mexico!:
