Bedloe's Island - Before the Statue of Liberty stood on Liberty Island, the small piece of land was named Bedloe's Island, after Dutch colonist Isaac Bedloe. The islands on the Hudson River estuary were known as the Oyster Islands when Bedloe secured a colonial land grant in 1667. Funnily enough, Colonial Governor Francis Lovelace would only confirm Bedloe’s ownership if he’d call the island “Love Island.” Bedloe agreed, but once he died and the Dutch navy overthrew Lovelace, it was renamed back to Bedloe’s Island. It wasn’t until 1956 that the island’s name was changed again to Liberty Island. By that time, the Statue of Liberty had been standing there for 79 years.:
