In search of work, many Americans left rural areas for the city and homelessness was high. People began to rely on bread lines and soup kitchens. However, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected, he implemented many changes that helped to rebuild the economy and inspired hope in the American people. With starts and stops, the economy had largely recovered by 1939. However, the Great Depression still affected people for years after. :
