Bertillon system - Before advances in criminology led to fingerprinting, criminologists used the Bertillon System. Invented in 1879 by French criminologist Alphonse Bertillon, the technique involved descriptive indicators using physical measurements to try and identify a suspect. Descriptors included standing height, “sitting height” (measurement from head to torso), the size of the head, left foot, right ear, forearm, digits, and the distance between the individual’s fingertips when their arms were outstretched. On top of that, any distinctive characteristics, like deformities or scars, were also made note of. Sounds complicated…and it was.
