Sam Houston - Out of all 50 US states, Texas has always seemed to be the one with the biggest independent streak. Part of the reason this might be was because prior to joining the United States, Texas used to be on its own. From 1836 to 1846, the Republic of Texas was an independent country that encompassed parts of present day Eastern and Central Texas. While Sam Houston was the first elected President of this Republic, contrary to popular belief, he was not the Republic’s first President. That title belongs to David G. Burnet who served as Interim President for 7 months prior to Houston’s swearing in.:
