John Wycliffe - This here is actually a rather interesting story. While Wycliffe is often considered the author of the first English translated Bible, that is only partially true. First of all, the entire Old Testament had already been translated by others in the past. The New Testament had been translated by a variety of people, but never in entirety by any one person, and most often from the Latin (which was already a translation off from the original). Wycliffe's Bible was the first full translation straight from the Vulgate, the standard and best effort of Latin translated Scriptures, which was used by the whole European church of the time. It was almost too literal, showing that word for word is not as effective as meaning for meaning. Purvey, Wycliffe's associate, created the second edition to try to bring some of the lost symbolic meaning back into the text. :
