[Answer] What was the state of Washington originally going to be named?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What was the state of Washington originally going to be named?"

...As the only U.S. state with a presidential namesake, Washington might not have had the privilege, if it wasn’t for Kentucky representative Richard H. Stanton. The rep proposed the name when the new territory came to be in 1853. It was originally going to be called “Columbia,” due to the Columbia River running through it, but Stanton thought this might be confused with the national capital, the District of Columbia. Others have since tried to rename the state, as Washington state is ironically sometimes confused with Washington, D.C. But all proposals have stalled, and Washington has stood his ground. Just as he did when he crossed the Delaware.
