While Jesus suffered on the cross, laboring to breathe, the soldiers divided up his clothing amongst themselves. They cast lots to see who would get his tunic while Jesus’ family and friends wept nearby. Jesus asked for a drink and they offered him some sour wine. Jesus called out, “It is finished!” and then he died. Now, since it was the day of Preparation for the Sabbath, the Jews asked for the men’s legs to be broken, so that they would no longer be able to push up to breathe and would die more quickly. The soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men who were crucified with Jesus. But they saw that Jesus was already dead. One of them stabbed Jesus’ side with his spear and blood and water poured out, attesting to the reality of his death.:
