He suffered verbal abuse from fans at most games. Walker was a good-field, no-hit catcher. He was born in a way station along the Underground Railroad in 1957. He played several seasons with a minor-league white minor-league team, then joined the American Association with the Toledo Blue Stockings. Segregation at that time was a "gentlemen's agreement" with no state or federal laws to stop a black man from playing. So, Walker integrated the game at age 26.
