I'll have to pull out my books but the old farmers almanac is both correct and incorrect. The "dog days of summer" or "Sirius days" varries from year to year and only lasts for a few days at a time. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and can be seen from anywhere on earth.... Except during the dog days of summer. Old magic practicers believed that Sirius actually helped heat the earth and during this time the sun was amplified by sirius. The actual time of the dog days of summer is the few days of the year where Sirius is NOT visable in the night sky
