...Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt quit his job when the Spanish-American War broke out. He left to lead a regiment of volunteers calling themselves the Rough Riders. "Teddy" and his regiment played an important part in the Battle of San Juan Hill and took part in other operations in Cuba.
