[Answer] 8. Which of these places would be home to an anchorite?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "8. Which of these places would be home to an anchorite?"

...1. a nunnery 2. a convent 3. a hermit's cell 4. a cloister Convents are where friars or sisters live. Cloister might be a synonym for a convent or for a monastery. A monastery is now the term for what monks live in. Monks can be male or female. In the latter case their monastery might be called a nunnery (archaic). Ironically enough the word monastery ("monasterion") originally referred to religious people living in isolation, "alone" (monos=one). But somehow people in isolation were admired by followers, asked for advice, and looked up at as examples. Hermits often became cenobites; people sharing meals, living in a monastic community. But anchorites on principle are not cenobites and stay in isolation. So a hermit's cell or a hermitage is where they belong.
