Step 2 : Answer to the question "How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop?"
1000:
Surprisingly, this study has been done a few times. A group of engineering students from Purdue University reported that its licking machine (yes, you've heard that correctly) modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of the tootsie pop. The University of Michigan ran its licking machine against the Tootsie Pop Challenge, as well. However. it was a doctoral student at NYU who actually licked this case clean. According to a study done by Journal of Fluid Mechanics, it takes a thousand licks to swipe through a centimeter of candy. Tootsie pops are 1.063 inches and therefore take roughly 2,500. Thank goodness these are the things doctoral students at NYU are researching!
