Sandro Botticelli painted his famous "Primavera" series, also known as "Spring," after he returned to Florentine from Rome in 1482. A cousin of Lorenzo de Medici commissioned the work as a celebration of de' Medici's marriage in that same year. The painting is a visual tribute to the arrival of spring and is ripe with mythological symbolism. It is a series of four panels that make up the whole of the work.
