In the 18th century, three unpublished familiar letters from Vespucci to Lorenzo de' Medici were rediscovered.

 On March 22, 1508 he was made the pilot major of Spain by Ferdinand II of Aragon in honor of his discoveries. 

Many scholars now believe that the two letters were not written by him but were fabrications by others based in part on genuine letters by Vespucci. 

Vespucci also ran a school for navigators in the Spanish House of Trade, based in Seville.
